Lem Nikodinoski is a prominent Macedonian politician who has suffered a severe heart attack. As Lem drifts between life and death, his mind wanders to his childhood, and he observes his younger self during his days in a camp for children whose parents were unwilling to embrace Russia’s Stalinist regime following World War II. Ariton (Mitko Apostolovski), the camp’s headmaster, is a strong taskmaster, but he displays a genuine compassion for his charges; Olivera, his second in command, takes a more stern approach, and is willing to dole out physical punishment to any child who does not absorb her Stalinist teachings. One day, a new boy enters the camp, Isak, who displays a calm but resilient nature that’s different from the fearful attitudes of the other children. After initial resistance, Lem becomes close friends with Isak, and their friendship helps Lem confront the horrors of camp life in a new way.

Gulabi Aaina (The Pink Mirror) (2003)

The Pink Mirror pits two Indian drag queens against a westernized gay teenager in a battle to woo a handsome hunk. It’s a clash of the east and west. Who will win? The drag queens, who are expert in the art of seduction with their wit, innuendo and cunning or the young teenager who is saucy, slutty and sly? Underneath the campy humorous exterior, the film is an exploration of the Indian gay landscape and understanding of the deep, humanly tender bondings that exist between drag queens in India who form unique, non-patriarchal families. Using the Bollywood soap idiom of song, dance and drama and for the first time in the Indian drag queens’ very own language, Hindi, the film also explores other veiled issues related to the Indian gay community: the lurking threat of HIV/AIDS.

Humpday (2009)

When Andrew unexpectedly shows up on Ben’s doorstep late one night, the two old college friends immediately fall into their old dynamic of heterosexual one-upmanship. To save Ben from domestication, Andrew invites Ben to a party at a sex-positive commune. Everyone there plans on making erotic art films for the local amateur porn festival and Andrew wants in. Kuma (2012)

Leather (2013)

Shot with a spot-on 1970s aesthetic and featuring a gorgeous folk soundtrack, Leather is an entertaining and erotically charged tale of modern gay urbanites forced to adjust to country living. When New Yorker Andrew hears that his estranged father Walter has died, he travels with his boyfriend Kyle to the cabin in the Catskill Mountains where his father spent his final years. Upon arrival, Andrew is shocked to find his childhood friend, Birch, is living in the cabin and spent the last few years being mentored by Walter. Birch spends his days fishing, practicing carpentry and making items from leather. Though Birch embraces a peaceful lifestyle free of modern technology, his presence leaves Andrew with conflicting emotions – regret, jealousy, suspicion and possibly desire.
